Swim season all dried up

13/05/2008 11:10:00 AM
COOMA swim star Ian Hampton has just returned from the Fina World championships in Perth and has been finding it hard to get back into the swim of things in Cooma where it's a little colder.

The event held every two years across the world attracts a number of athletes of all ages and in all disciplines of swimming.

"There were more than 5000 swimmers were there and it covers swimming, diving, water polo, synchronised swimming and an open water swim in the Swan River," Hampton said.

Hampton completed five events in the pool and took part in the open water swim.

"My best swim was probably the 200-metre breaststroke I came twelfth," Hampton said.

Hampton who has been swimming for over 40 years said he finds it difficult to train in Cooma in the winter with the limited facilities.

"It's a bit of a problem in the winter in Cooma, I try to go to Jindabyne once a week and Canberra once a week for a swim," he said.

There are plans to upgrade Cooma's swim facilities but shire recreation and property manager Ross Lawley said there are no plans to turn the pool into a year round centre.

"$300,000 has been set aside to upgrade and move the amenities to the south side of the pool," Mr Lawley said.

"But 18 months ago council found out it was going to cost 1.45 million and at the time we made applications to both the State and Federal governments which haven't been successful."

Mr Lawley said the feasibility of making the pool a year round venture was not possible in a town the size of Cooma.

Mr Lawley would not rule it out indefinitely but said that it was not part of the plans at the moment.
