COOMA bowlers are starting to prepare for what promises to be a very busy 2008/2009 season.
The bowlers' eagerness has been displayed in recent weeks with excellent fields nominating to play social bowls on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays despite the cold weather.
To their surprise, the bowlers have found that the greens are playing well despite the conditions, which is a real credit to the work of the recently contracted green keeper, Quod's Mowing and Irrigation.
The first events for the season will be the triples and fours championships, draws have been made for both events and are on display on the fixtures board.
After several representations from players, bowls organiser Mark Buckley has decided to change the original schedule of play.
There was a feeling that it was too early to play this important event.
Players would like a few more weeks to get some practice and for the weather to warm up.
The fours have been put back a month and will now be played after the triples.
Play in the triples will begin on the weekend of September 13 and 14. The details are displayed at the club.
The first representative event for the year will be the defence of the Patrons Cup against Bombala at Bombala on Sunday, October 12.
The newly elected selection committee will start looking at choosing the team to represent the club.
Players are reminded that everyone participating in these events must have the correct attire.
A limited number of club shirts are available at the club with a new order on the way.
Also, the Illawarra Bowls Shop will make its annual visit on Saturday, August 30 and will have the full range of clothing and equipment available.
Social bowls will be played on both days this weekend, commencing at 1pm, with nominations in by noon.
While the current structure of social bowls is proving popular and very enjoyable, the bowls committee is currently looking at a proposal to introduce a competitive element to encourage bowlers to play in social bowls and reward those who play regularly.
The basic idea is that a record will be kept of results over a series of weeks with a prize going to players with the best win record.
Teams will be randomly determined each day using the 'Joe Special' method - that is teams, rinks and opponents are drawn using the specially marked paddle pop sticks.
More details will be published when they are finalised at a later date. It is hoped this will start next weekend.
