Carroll nurtures creativity

LOCAL children's author and teacher Jane Carroll has begun hosting a number of creative writing workshops to help people become more effective writers.

Eight different nationalities were represented at the second workshop session on Tuesday at the Monaro Family Support Service.

Mrs Carroll said she was excited by the challenge to teach both native English language speakers alongside those for whom English is a second language.

"I'm working with them to help them tell their stories," she said.

"I don't know what is going to come out of it yet."

Concentrating on helping the students use language differently Mrs Carroll tries to get them to think about writing not so much in technical terms but more so in terms of using language too create images in the readers minds.

"I concentrate on how to write narrative, how to engage the reader and how to make their writing not boring," she said.

"So far all the scenes have been completely different and very entertaining."

The workshops will be running every Tuesday until July at the Monaro Family Support Service from 9.30am until 11am.

For more information phone Yvi Henderson on 6452 3450.
